Irradiated diamonds are diamonds that have been treated with some form of radiation to change their color, often into unatural hues. diamonds were originally irradiated in 1904 by burying diamonds in radium bromide salts. These diamonds changed to green, took many months to irradiate and retained some levels of radiation. Some irradiated diamonds were treated in a nuclear pile (the first nuclear reactor made by piling up graphite blocks and pieces of uranium and uranium oxide); these diamonds retain levels of radiation. Others are "soaked" in modern reactor cores; while others are irradiated in cyclotrons or lineal accelerators. During some treatments they fall under the guidelines of the NRC and require a "cool down" period. To achieve other colors diamonds could be heated after they were irradiated. Few dealers offer irradiated diamonds.
